Signing with Mechanic Records , the group began working on its first full-length album. Delays caused by label mismanagement limited the group to performing at small clubs and bars.

Frustrated by its experiences with the label, Dream Theater finally severed its ties with Mechanic. This was only one drastic change in the band's course of action. Firing Dominici, the group spent the next couple years searching for a vocalist.

The search ended in late when a demo tape from Canadian vocalist James LaBrie , formerly of Winter Rose , arrived. After flying to New York to audition, LaBrie was invited to join the band. Although Theater showed considerable growth with their third studio album, Awake, recorded between May and July , the group continued to be hampered by personnel changes.

Before the album was mixed, keyboardist Moore left the group to focus on his solo career. Hired as a temporary replacement for the band's Waking Up the World tour, Derek Sherinian later became a permanent member. His first recording with Dream Theater was a minute epic, "A Change of Seasons," written in and released in September on the album of the same name.

Following a mini tour, Fix for '96, the members of Dream Theater separated for several months and became involved with a variety of outside projects. Petrucci was the busiest. Some of us choose to live gracefully. Some can get caught in the maze. And lose their way home. This is the life we belong to. Our gift divine. Like the music itself, lyrics have personal connotations, given meaning by your own life experiences, or those of people close to you.

I suspect this is why music is so powerful, and why different songs and artists resonate with different listeners. But let me tell you why the above hits me. I think most of us have had those nights. At least to me. But then, you know and yeah, this is going to lapse maudlin, sorry gang , it just so happens that often we bring this suffering upon ourselves.

Your choices, quite often, are how you got there to those solemn, barren nights. The solemn barrenness has claimed its share of lives. A good man. A thoughtful man. A broken man. And he just recently took his own life. That's as much as I can say about it here.

But we all belong to the life given us. It comes with difficulties and heartache and grace. Or, it means God-given. You see my point, I think. But he did. Because a few of the tunes really slice to the bone. Music that will thrill me even when all is well. I want to rock. And when I do, I co-create with the musician as I listen to their music and give it an audience, and meaning. And to go one level deeper, with each of these guys before closing out this blog.

Likewise, there are some more intimate, acoustic songs. Lots of guys with speed, few know how to use it. Beyond his ability to match the musical figures that Petrucci and Rudess often play, Myung is equally strong at laying down a solid and unique low end for the band to layer on top of. Nicely done. This sonic information gives a richness and energy to the song here that it otherwise would be missing.

Another keyboard player might sit back on a key pad. He captures the feeling of loss and perhaps some small bit of hope in his line, and all with a sound that just feels right. The selection of sound and notes is inspired. It gives me chills. The first, best thing I can say about this guy is that he works inside the many parts of these songs to transparently massage transitions from one section to another. Drummers with this ability, well you can probably name on one hand the ones who can do this with a band at the level DT is playing.
